There are a few different types of meditation practices, but all Buddhist meditation is very much similar to any other meditation practice. The types include calming meditation (samatha), insight meditation (vipassana), loving-kindness meditation (Metta Bhavana).

The goal of samatha meditation is to calm the mind and train it to concentrate. This is important for the practice of mindfulness and for insight meditation.

The goal of vipassana meditation is to realize truths concerning impermanence, suffering and non-self.

The goal of Metta Bhavana (Metta for short) meditation is to cultivate bodchitta, the altruistic love for all sentient beings, which is essential on the path of awakening.

There are many resource that can explain how each of these meditations are performed. One such site is given below as a related link.

If properly done, it's essentially the same as any other kind of true meditation. That is, focusing the mind for long time on a very specific and simple object, being physical or not (even "no object" could be). It seems that in Buddhist meditation some meditation objects are more frequent. Such is the case of meditation on breathing, on the body parts or on the full body as a whole among others.
