It depends on what church you go to. Some churches are very traditional, although I have never personally been to one quite a traditional as the Catholic services I've gone to. Many pastors like to start their sermons with a joke or somewhat funny comment that ties into the message. Some are very contemporary. Either way, there is an awful lot of singing by the congregation, whether old hymns or new worship songs. There's usually a confession of sins, Bible readings, responsive readings back and forth with the pastor, a sermon, and Communion, among other things.
If you are a guest, you will probably be informed by the bulletin that the Lutheran church, or at least the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, practices closed Communion, which means they do not believe in taking Communion (the ritual bread and wine) with those who are from a different denomination. It would be requested that you ask for only a blessing instead of drinking the wine and eating the bread.
