The sea swallowed them up. The Pharoah was left standing to see his army drowning in the sea. This is considered quite harsh, but don't forget that the Pharoah had been suppressing the Jews for years. Moses and God felt that they needed to stop him.
When the Egyptians followed Moses , to the Red sea and they tried to follow the people, god drowned the Egyptians in the sea.
Moses parted the Red Sea for the Jews to cross through. When the Egyptians came up behind them, the walls of the sea crashed down on them.
