The Christian church spread quickly in the Dark Ages because it filled a spiritual vacuum; feuding tribes had ruled the land for hundreds of years after the fall of the Roman Empire. Religion was indigenous barbarian paganism. When the church arrives, structure arrives with it. People stop warring when they are converted and merge to form larger empires. As a result of larger empires, the empires conquer pathetic barbarian tribes and spread the church with them, so the church could spread quickly. Another aspect is the wealth of the church; the church collected a tithe and so became very rich and powerful. It controlled armies, organised law and order and censored learning.

Even today the church is very rich; this is why it still spreads today, although today the church is converting 'heathens' in Africa etc. to Christianity, thus further increasing its wealth.

I am sure that there are factors I have omitted, so please feel free to add.

There were several factors that led to the development and spread of Christianity. Firstly, the teachings of Jesus and the message of salvation appealed to many people who were searching for spiritual meaning and fulfillment. Additionally, the Roman Empire's Pax Romana provided a relatively stable and safe environment for the early Christians to spread their faith. Furthermore, the development of the codex (early form of a book) made it easier to disseminate and preserve Christian scriptures, facilitating the spread of Christianity through the written word.

What helped popes spread Christianity?

The Catholic Church did NOT "help" to spread Christianity. It did spread Christianity through the lives and witnesses of thousands of saints over the centuries. The Catholic Church is the only Church founded by Our Blessed Lord, and He guaranteed to be with it until the end of the world. (Matthew 28:20)
