Crucifixion is arguably the most painful and demeaning form of execution ever devised. It epitomises the harshest treatment given to the lowest of criminals. It is simple enough that the victim is not honoured by any effort made, but is also an agonisingly slow and excruciating death by a number of factors. The afflicted tend to die of asphyxiation when they no longer have the strength to raise themselves to take another breath, also, their lungs are filling with fluid.

.

In the context of the Son of God being killed by this method, it means He has taken the worst punishment to world had to offer, despite being totally undeserving of death. It means, simply, that Our Blessed Lord chose the most painful, horrible, degrading torture to show His love for us.
