Christians (I am one, so I know) have a belief that is written all throughout God's Word: that living a life away from God ultimately leads us to death (because of sin). This means that when we die, having not accepted Jesus as our savior, we will be detached from God (the source of all life). So having "life" in a church is simply having life (God) as a part of you. In contrast, being out of church (away from God) is the opposite of life (death). This does not mean that you HAVE to go to church to be saved. But God wants us, when we come to know Him, to become a part of His congregation of sinners, on a journey to bettering their relationship with God together.

That depends upon what you mean by prolonging life. If it means using normal medical means to keep a person alive - eg: nutrition, water, medications, oxygen, etc., the Church not only approves it but demands it. If you mean keeping a body alive by machines and purely artificial and extraordinary means, while the Church does not outright forbid it, they do not encourage it since it does not truly prolong life as we know it and may interfere with a natural death. On the other hand, the Church forbids assisted suicide. God, alone, determines when a life should end.
The Church is its people.
It would be a dead church with no life. Mission in some form is an integral part of Christian life and the Church.
