If you are a Christian then sin breaks your fellowship with God and The Bible tells us we should confess our sin to God and to other Christians. We already have been forgiven for all our sin past present and future - we need to maintain our walk with God.

1Jn 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

These words were written to Christians so they are not talking about confession for salvation but a Christian's on going walk with God.

James writes we should maintain a right relationship with fellow believers through confession and prayer

Jas 5:16 Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

nothing happens at the moment, but God knows that you sinned, you should ask for forgiveness. At the end of the wold God will judge you for all the sins that you have commited and you have to give an acount of them, our life on this earth is just the beginning. what we do here will effect us for eternity
