In the ideal world, we would say "of course not!" But for many people today, sports have become very much like a religion. Some fans worship athletes and put them up on a pedestal; they are only happy when their team wins, and depressed when it loses. For these fans, sports is the most important thing, even more important than attending religious services.
But while sports can be important, so can religion. it should not be an either-or situation, where you have to choose only one. People can be fans without forgetting the ethical teachings of their religion. And a religious person can certainly enjoy athletics, whether as a participant or as a fan. But most clergy would say it's a bad idea to put more faith in star athletes than in God, or let sports dominate one's life to the exclusion of religion.
