What did the old testament prophets predict about Jesus?

The Bible predicted many things in great detail about the promised Messiah. Some of these specific prophecies are :- (1) He Would Be The "Seed Of A Woman"

Prophesied Genesis 3:15

Gen 3:15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He will bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel.

Fulfilled Galatians 4:4

Gal 4:4 But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, coming into being out of a woman, having come under Law,

(2) He would be the promised Seed of Abraham

Prophesied Gen 18:18

Gen 18:18 And Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the persons of the earth shall be blessed in him?

Fulfilled Acts 3:25

Act 3:25 You are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying to Abraham, "And in your Seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed."

(3) He would be the promised Seed of Isaac

Gen 17:19 And God said, Sarah your wife shall bear you a son indeed. And you shall call his name Isaac. And I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.

(5) He will descend from the tribe of Judah

(6) He would be the Heir to the throne of David

Isa 9:7 There is no end of the increase of His government and peace on the throne of David, and on His kingdom, to order it and to establish it with judgment and with justice from now on, even forever. The zeal of Jehovah of Hosts will do this.

(7) Would be born in Bethlehem

(8) Would be born of a virgin

Prophesied Isaiah 7:14

Isa 7:14 So, the Lord Himself shall give you a sign. Behold, the virgin will conceive and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call His name Immanuel.

Fulfilled Matt 1:18

Mat 1:18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was this way (for His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph) before they came together, she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit.

(9) Massacre of infants

Prophesied Jeremiah 31:15

Jer 31:15 So says Jehovah: A voice was heard in Ramah, wailing and bitter weeping; Rachel weeping for her sons; she refuses to be comforted for her sons, because they are not.

Fulfilled Matt 2:16

Mat 2:16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked by the wise men, was greatly enraged. And he sent and killed all the boys in Bethlehem, and in all its districts, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had carefully inquired of the wise men.

(10) He would flee to Egypt

(11) His Ministry would be in Galilee

Prophesied Isa 9:1-2

Isa 9:1 Yet there will be no gloom for her who was in anguish, as in the former time. He degraded the land of Zebulun, and the land of Naphtali, so afterwards He will glorify the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the nations.

Isa 9:2 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; they who dwell in the land of the shadow of death, on them the light has shined.

Fulfilled Matt 4:12-16

Mat 4:12 But when Jesus heard that John was thrown into prison, He went back into Galilee.

Mat 4:13 And leaving Nazareth, He came and lived in Capernaum, which is on the seacoast, in the borders of Zebulun and Naphtali,

Mat 4:14 so that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying,

(12) He would be a Prophet

Deu 18:15 Jehovah your God will raise up to you a Prophet from the midst of you, of your brothers, One like me. To Him you shall listen,

(13) He would be a priest like Melchizedek

Prophesied Ps 110:4

Psa 110:4 Jehovah has sworn, and will not repent, You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.

Fulfilled Heb 6:20

Heb 6:20 where the Forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.

(14) He would be rejected by the Jews

Prophesied Isa 53:3

Isa 53:3 He is despised and rejected of men; a Man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as it were a hiding of faces from Him, He being despised, and we esteemed Him not.

Fulfilled John 1:11

Joh 1:11 He came to His own, and His own received Him not.

(15) His triumphal entry into Jerusalem

Prophesied Zechariah 9:9

Zec 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem; behold, your King comes to you. He is righteous and victorious, meek and riding on an ass, even on a colt, the son of an ass.

Fulfilled John 12:13-15

Joh 12:13 took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him. And they cried, Hosanna! "Blessed is the King of Israel who comes in the name of the Lord!"

Joh 12:14 And finding an ass colt, Jesus sat on it; as it is written,

(16) He would be betrayed by a friend

Mar 14:10 And Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the chief priests in order to betray Him to them.

(17) He would be sold for 30 pieces of silver

Prophesied Zechariah 11:12

Zec 11:12 And I said to them, If it is good, give My price; and if not, let it go. So they weighed My price thirty pieces of silver.

Fulfilled Matt 26:15

Mat 26:15 And he said to them, What will you give me, and I will betray Him to you? And they appointed to him thirty pieces of silver.

(18) The money to be returned for a potter's field

Prophesied Zech 11:13

Zec 11:13 And Jehovah said to me, Throw it to the potter, the magnificent price at which I was valued by them. And I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them to the potter in the house of Jehovah.

Fulfilled Matt 27:6-7

Mat 27:6 And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood.

Mat 27:7 And they took counsel and bought the potter's field with them, to bury strangers in.

(19) His betrayer's office to be taken by another

Prophesied Ps 109:7-8

Psa 109:7 when he is judged, let him be condemned; and let his prayer become sin.

Psa 109:8 Let his days be few; let another take his office.

Fulfilled Acts 1:18-20

Act 1:18 Indeed, then, this one purchased a field with the reward of unrighteousness. And falling headlong, he burst apart in the middle, and all his bowels gushed out.

Act 1:19 And it was known to all the dwellers at Jerusalem, so much so that that field is called in their own dialect, Akeldama, that is to say, Field of Blood.

Act 1:20 For it is written in the Book of Psalms, "Let his estate become forsaken, and he not be living in it." And, "Let another take his overseership."

(20) False witnesses to accuse Him

Prophesied Ps 27:12

Psa 27:12 Deliver me not over to the will of my enemies; for false witnesses have risen up against me, and he that breathes out cruelty.

Fulfilled Matt 26:60-61

Mat 26:60 But they found none; yea, though many false witnesses came, they found none. But at last two false witnesses came up

(21) He would be silent when accused

Prophesied Isa 53:7

Isa 53:7 He was oppressed, and He was afflicted; yet He opened not His mouth. He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter; and as a sheep before its shearers is dumb, so He opened not His mouth.

Fulfilled Matt 26:62-63

Mat 26:62 And standing up, the high priest said to Him, Do you answer nothing? What is it that these witness against you?

Mat 26:63 But Jesus was silent. And the high priest answered and said to Him, I adjure you by the living God that you tell us whether you are the Christ, the Son of God.

(22) He would be beaten and spat upon

Prophesied Isa 50:6

Isa 50:6 I gave My back to the strikers, and My cheeks to pluckers; I did not hide My face from shame and spitting.

Fulfilled Mark 14:65

Mar 14:65 And some began to spit on Him, and to cover His face and to beat Him, and to say to Him, Prophesy! And the under-officers struck Him with slaps.

(23) He would be hated without a cause

Prophesied Ps 69:4

Psa 69:4 They who hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head; they who would destroy me are mighty, my lying enemies. Then I restored what I did not take away.

Fulfilled John 15:23-25

Joh 15:23 He who hates Me hates My Father also.

Joh 15:24 If I had not done among them the works which no other did, they would not have had sin. But now they have both seen and hated Me and My Father.

Joh 15:25 But that the Word might be fulfilled that is written in their Law, "They hated Me without a cause."

(24) He suffered vicariously

Prophesied Isaiah 53:4-5

Isa 53:4 Surely He has borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

Isa 53:5 But He was wounded for our transgressions; He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was on Him; and with His stripes we ourselves are healed.

Fulfilled Matt 8:16-17

Mat 8:16 And evening coming on, they brought to Him many who had been possessed with demons. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick

Mat 8:17 so that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying, "He took on Himself our weaknesses and bore our sicknesses."

(25) He would be crucified with sinners

Prophesied Isa 53:12

Isa 53:12 Therefore I will divide to Him with the great, and He shall divide the spoil with the strong; because He has poured out His soul to death; and He was counted among the transgressors; and He bore the sin of many, and made intercession for transgressors.

Fulfilled Matt 27:38

Mat 27:38 Then two thieves were crucified with Him, one off the right, one off the left.

(26) His hands and feet would be pierced

Prophesied Ps 22:16

Psa 22:16 and You have brought Me into the dust of death. For dogs have circled around Me; the band of spoilers have hemmed Me in, piercers of My hands and My feet.

Fulfilled John 20:27

Joh 20:27 Then He said to Thomas, Reach your finger here and behold My hands; and reach your hand here and thrust it into My side; and do not be unbelieving, but believing.

(27) He would be mocked and insulted

Prophesied Ps 22:6-8

Psa 22:6 But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised by the people.

Psa 22:7 All who see Me mock me; they shoot out the lip; they shake the head, saying,

Psa 22:8 He trusted on Jehovah; let Him deliver Him; let Him rescue Him, since He delights in Him!

Fulfilled Matt 27:39-40

Mat 27:39 And those who passed by blasphemed Him, shaking their heads,

Mat 27:40 and saying, You destroying the temple and building it in three days, save yourself. If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.

(28) He would be given gall [sour wine] and vinegar to drink

Prophesied Ps 69:21

Psa 69:21 They also gave Me gall for my food; and in My thirst they gave Me vinegar to drink.

Fulfilled John 19:29

Joh 19:29 Then a vessel full of vinegar was set. And they filled a sponge with sour wine and put it upon hyssop, and put it to His mouth.

(29) Would hear prophetic words repeated in mockery

Prophesied Ps 22:8

Psa 22:8 He trusted on Jehovah; let Him deliver Him; let Him rescue Him, since He delights in Him!

Fulfilled Matt 27:43

Mat 27:43 He trusted in God, let Him deliver Him now, if He will have Him. (For He said, I am the Son of God.)

(30) He would pray for His enemies

Prophesied Ps 109:4

Psa 109:4 They oppose me, even though I love them and have prayed for them. [GNB]

Fulfilled Luke 23:34

Luk 23:34 And Jesus said, Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do. And parting His clothing, they cast lots.

(31) His side would be pierced

Prophesied Zech 12:10

Zec 12:10 "I will fill the descendants of David and the other people of Jerusalem with the spirit of mercy and the spirit of prayer. They will look at the one whom they stabbed to death, and they will mourn for him like those who mourn for an only child. They will mourn bitterly, like those who have lost their first-born son.

Fulfilled John 19:34

Joh 19:34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a lance, and instantly there came out blood and water.

(32) Lots would be cast for His clothes

Prophesied Ps 22:18

Psa 22:18 They divide My garments among them and cast lots for My clothing.

(33) None of His bones would be broken

Psa 34:20 He keeps all his bones; not one of them is broken.

(34) He would be buried with the rich

Prophesied Isa 53:9

Isa 53:9 And He put His grave with the wicked, and with a rich one in His death; although He had done no violence, nor was any deceit in His mouth.

Fulfilled Matt 27:57-60

Mat 27:57 When the evening had come, a rich man of Arimathea, named Joseph, came, who also himself was Jesus' disciple.

Mat 27:58 He went to Pilate and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.

Mat 27:59 When Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in clean linen,

Mat 27:60 and laid it in his new tomb, which he had cut out of the rock. And he rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb and departed.

(35) His resurrection

Prophesied Ps 16:10

Psa 16:10 For You will not leave My soul in hell; You will not allow Your Holy One to see corruption.

Fulfilled Matt 28:9

Mat 28:9 But as they were going to report to His disciples, behold, Jesus also met them, saying, Hail! And they came and held Him by the feet and worshiped Him.

(36) His ascension

Prophesied Ps 68:18

Psa 68:18 You have gone up on high; You have led captivity captive; You have received gifts for men, yes, for the rebellious also, that You might dwell among them, O Jehovah God.

Fulfilled Luke 24:50-51

Luk 24:50 And He led them out as far as Bethany. And lifting up His hands, He blessed them.

Luk 24:51 And it happened as He blessed them, He withdrew from them and was carried up into Heaven.

According to the Messiah, Himself, the Scriptures are "all about Him":

"...'You are such foolish people! You find it so hard to believe all that the prophets wrote in the Scriptures. Wasn't it clearly predicted by the prophets that the Messiah would have to suffer all these things before entering into His Glory?' Then Jesus quoted passages from the writings of Moses and all the prophets, explaining what all the Scriptures said about Himself." (Luke 24:25-27 NLT New Living Translation)

"...'When I was with you before [before His murder, now that He lived again], I told you that everything written about Me by Moses and the prophets and in the Psalms must all come True.' Then He opened their minds [hearts; spirits] to Understand these many Scriptures." (verses 44-45)

The Scriptures says that "Jesus is coming back to earth a SECOND TIME!"

"And since it is appointed to men ONCE TO DIE, and AFTER THAT THE JUDGMENT; so also the Christ, after being ONCE OFFERED for all to bear the sins of many, WILL APPEAR A SECOND TIME, without sin, to those who wait for Him for Salvation." (Heb.9:27-28 MNT Montgomery New Testament)

But the second time He won't be as a meek and mild Lamb for anyone to slaughter... but as the All-Powerful world-ruling King in command of a mighty angelic army, wielding all the Power that created the universe: the Sword of God's Word.

Same verses as above [NLT]: "And just as it is destined that each person dies only once and after that comes Judgment, so also Christ died only once as a sacrifice to take away the sins of many people. HE WILL COME AGAIN but not to deal with our sins again. This time He will bring Salvation to all those who are eagerly waiting for Him."

"He will defend the poor and the exploited. He will rule against the wicked and destroy them with the breath of His mouth." (Isa.11:4 NLT)

"...He Judges fairly and then GOES TO WAR... His title was the Word of God. The armies of heaven... followed Him on white horses. From OUT OF HIS MOUTH CAME A SHARP SWORD, and with it HE STRUCK DOWN THE NATIONS. He ruled them with an iron rod, and He trod the winepress of the fierce wrath of Almighty God." (Rev.19:11-15 NLT)

"...Let everyone tremble in fear because the DAY OF THE LORD [the LORD's return to earth with His army] is upon us. It is a Day of darkness and gloom. Suddenly, like dawn spreading across the mountains, a Mighty Army appears! How Great and Powerful they are! The likes of them have not been seen before and never will be seen again. Fire burns in front of them and follows them in every direction! ...Fear grips all the people; every face grows pale from fright. The attackers march like warriors and scale city walls like trained soldiers. Straight forward they march, never breaking rank. They never jostle each other; each moves in exactly the right place... no weapon can stop them... THE LORD LEADS THEM WITH A SHOUT! This is HIS MIGHTY ARMY, and they follow His orders. THE DAY OF THE LORD IS AN AWESOME, TERRIBLE THING. Who can endure it?" (Joel 2:1-11 NLT)

"That is why the LORD says, 'Turn to Me now, while there is still time! Give Me your hearts. Come with fasting, weeping, and mourning. Don't tear your clothing in your grief; instead, tear your hearts.' Return to the LORD your God, for He is Gracious and Merciful. He is not easily angered. He is filled with Kindness and is eager not to punish you." (verses 12-13)

The Scriptures reveal that this "Christ-hating" world "doesn't believe the Messiah is coming back" -- especially since this Satan-worshiping world doesn't believe He came the first time!

"When the world hates you, remember it hated Me before it hated you. The world would love you if you belonged to it, but you don't. I chose you to come out of the world, and so it hates you... The people of the world will hate you because YOU BELONG TO ME, for they don't know the God who sent Me." (John 15:18-21 NLT)

Even many of the hundreds of deceived [yet sincere] modern professing Christian denominations today... although they say they "believe" on Him... hate Jesus, because "they don't believe a Word He says" [that is, believe what the Scriptures say -- see John 8:30 thru to the end of the chapter for a sampling of how this is possible].

This is what Jesus warns His disciples about in the world: false Christianity, in Matthew 24:4-5:

"...'Don't let anyone mislead you. For MANY will come in My Name, saying, ''I am the Messiah.'' THEY WILL LEAD MANY ASTRAY."

Jesus doesn't say, "Beware of a few random crackpots pretending to be Me." These types have never fooled many people. Jesus is talking about the MANY divided denominations in the world who profess His name... but "don't believe or obey what the Scriptures say." Like the Scriptures above that say He's coming back.

The many deceived denominations of professing Christianity "don't believe Jesus is coming back!"

"This will be their argument: 'Jesus promised to come back, did He? Then where is He? Why, as far back as anyone can remember, everything has remained exactly the same since the world was first created." (II Peter 3:4 NLT)

And so, impatient man, lost in his religious deceptions foisted upon him by the god of this world, has given up believing what the Scriptures say... and has taken up the chant and most heartfelt desire of this world's god. Since they don't believe Jesus is coming back, according to the Scriptures; like the god they truly worship... they all "want to go to heaven" instead, where the Messiah is!

"For you SAID TO YOURSELF [in your deepest, most wicked heartfelt thought and desire], 'I WILL ASCEND INTO HEAVEN ['I will go to heaven'] and set my throne above God's stars [angels - see Rev.1:20]... I will climb to the highest heavens [the third heaven of God's throne - see II Cor.12:2] and BE LIKE THE MOST HIGH [I will be God]." (Isa.14:13-14 NLT)

This false religious belief [by more than one false religion] negates the necessity for the Messiah to come back to earth at all, if everyone is going there. And this belief in spite of what the Messiah Himself says:

"For ONLY I, the Son of Man, have come to earth and WILL RETURN TO HEAVEN AGAIN." (John 3:13 NLT)

And: "...'I will be here a little longer. Then I will return to the One who sent Me. You will search for Me but not find Me. And YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO COME WHERE I AM.'" John 7:33-34 NLT)

The Scriptures reveal that the Messiah is coming back to earth with His Kingdom [God's Government] to save mankind and the world. A revelation that few people in the world believe... or have ever believed throughout man's generations.

"In that Day of Peace, [can anyone on this planet begin to imagine such a day?] battle gear will no longer be issued. Never again will uniforms be bloodstained by war. All such equipment will be burned. And the Government will rest on His shoulders. These will be His Royal titles: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His ever-expanding, Peaceful Government will never end. He will rule forever with fairness and justice from the throne of His ancestor David. The passionate commitment of the LORD Almighty will guarantee this!" (Isa.9:5-7 NLT)

The Scriptures say: "And the LORD WILL BE KING OVER ALL THE EARTH. On that Day [of the LORD] there will be ONE LORD - His Name alone will be worshiped." (Zech.14:9 NLT)

In this deceived, sin-sick, Satan-worshiping world... there are many who claim to "believe in the Messiah." Not the majority of the world's population, to be sure; but many nonetheless. But very, very few of those who "believe on Jesus," as did those Jews in John's chapter 8, believe what the Scriptures say about His coming back.
