When the Mormon Pioneers first arrived in what is now Utah, it was part of Mexico. They moved there purposely because the American Government had treated them so poorly.
In 1875, missionary work began among the Mexican people. (Prior to that, very few Church materials were available in Spanish).
In the past few decades, membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" church) has exploded! In the 1970's, there were about 200,000 members in Mexico. Now, there are 1.2 million! This could very well reflect the fact that the Mexican government formally registered the Church in 1993.
The Mormons and Mexicans have a shared history in the western United States. Both groups were involved in settlement and development of the region, with the Mormons establishing settlements in Utah and the Mexicans contributing to the cultural diversity of the area. Additionally, both groups faced challenges and discrimination due to their religious or ethnic backgrounds.
Mormonism is not particularly popular in Mexico. Catholicism is much more popular. Out of the 112 million residents of Mexico, approximately 1.3 million of these are baptized Mormons, which means about 1% of all Mexicans are Mormons, and about 10% of all Mormons are Mexicans.
Over 95% of Mexicans are Christians of various denominations such as Catholics (the majority), Protestants, Adventists, Mormons and others. See related questions for further detail.
Traditionally, Pueblos, Utes, some Apaches. Then Spanish, Mexicans, Mormons, US Government. Today, no one.
