Dismas was a robber since he was a child. He assaulted people who traveled in the dangerous routes of the ancient Palestine. He had been imprisoned several times but released later because he had not killed anybody. But his mate of misdeeds, Gestas, stripped naked Sarah, who was the priestess of the Temple and the daughter of Caiaphas. This criminal and defiant act concerned indirectly also Dismas and finally Pilate decided to inflict an exemplary punishment to finish with the bandits that infested the territory: he imprisoned Dismas and put him to death by crucifixion. Gestas, was arrested at the same time and condemned to die in the same ignominious and cruel way.
Nothing had been known about Dismas and Gestas if they had not been crucified with Jesus. Before doing their way to Calvary, they were also flagellated and carried with their crosses. On arriving there, the three were naked and nailed to their crosses. On being his wirsts and feet pierced with nails, Dismas cried and begged mercy. But on the cross Dismas repented of his misdeeds and implored Jesus to remember him. Dismas and Gestas finally died when the breaking of legs was applied to them after 5 hours of horrible sufferings.
