Women could dress freely in their homes, but in the public it was a whole nother situation. They wore clothes with a robe draping around their body and head. Some even wore an extra veil around their whole face except for their eyes. Men wore regular clothes with a turban for religious reaons.

In ancient Timbuktu, people primarily wore loose-fitting garments made of cotton or other lightweight fabrics to cope with the hot climate. Both men and women typically wore long flowing robes, with men sometimes adding a loose-fitting pants-like garment underneath. The clothing was often adorned with intricate embroidery and embellishments to reflect the cultural and social status of the wearer.
