Saini is a warrior caste, Jatt is not a caste its a farming or agricultural community. In Punjab both Saini and Jatt are land owner farmersbut 46% of farming land is owned by Ramdasia sikhs. Saini is caste of Rajput descent which also got engaged in agriculture during Muslim invasion. They originate from Surasena kingdom and are basically Suryavanshi Rajputs of Rama's clan. The clan moved to Punjab during the invasion of Ghazni to fight his armies and never returned to their original home in Mathura. Genetic and ABO blood studies have shown their serological and gene frequencies identical to neighboring Rajputs on hills who also have similar legends of origin from Mathura. Almost all of clan names of both groups, such as Salaria, Badwal, Bilowria, Tirotia, Dhamrait, Banga, Gohunia, Taank, Mangar, etc are also identical.

It should be noted that Punjabi Sainis are different from the Mali community found in Delhi and beyond. The latter adopted Saini identity in 1930 to escape discrimnation and gain access to army jobs which were then reserved for select caste groups of which Sainis of Punjab were a part. Many other caste groups changed their identities in that era.

Sainis have no link with Jats in any form whatsoever, except that both groups are located in Punjab and are leadiing landowning castes. Both castes are also distinct culturally. For example, Jats practivced adelphic polyandry and karewa which were never practiced by Sainis.

Sainis are only found in sub-mountainous districts of Punjab. Jats are found all over Punjab, Haryana, West UP and Rajasthan.

In Punjab Saini village are also completely separate from Jat villages. There are only a handful of villages where both communities are found together. Both groups lead in their respective villages and are generally on friendly terms.
