1- Believe in one God.

2- Follow God's teachings.

This life is a test for us:

18:7 Indeed, We have made that which is on the earth adornment for it that We may test them as to which of them is best in deed 103:1-3

1 By time, 2 Indeed, mankind is in loss, 3 Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.

7:35 O ye Children of Adam! whenever there come to you messengers from amongst you, rehearsing My Signs unto you,- those who are righteous and mend (their lives),- on them shall be no fear nor shall they grieve. 16:97 Whoever works righteousness man or woman and has Faith, verily, to him will We give a Life that is good and pure and We will bestow on such their reward according to the best of their actions.

Islam is a monotheistic religion.

Muslims believe in one God who has no partners, no children, no parent,...

This is the Muslim understanding of God:

112:1-4

Say: He is Allah, the One and Only;

Allah, the Eternal, Absolute;

He begetteth not, nor is He begotten;

And there is none like unto Him.

2:256

Allah - there is no god except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence. Neither sleepiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi (throne) extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

Beliefs:

Muslims believe in One God and the Muhammad is his last messenger.

Muslims believe in God, his angels, his books, his messengers, the Day of Judgment, destiny.

These are some laws of Islam:

6:151 Say, "Come, I will recite what your Lord has prohibited to you. [He commands] that you not associate anything with Him, and to parents, good treatment, and do not kill your children out of poverty; We will provide for you and them. And do not approach immoralities - what is apparent of them and what is concealed. And do not kill the soul which Allah has forbidden [to be killed] except by [legal] right. This has He instructed you that you may use reason."

some rituals and practices:

the 5 daily prayers (dawn, noon, afternoon, sunset, night)

fasting during the month of Ramadan.

the Muslims taxes known as "zakah" which is mainly paying money to the poor.

pilgrimage (to Mecca) at least once in a lifetime if you can afford it.

To reach heaven in Christianity all you have to do is believe that Jesus died on the cross for you to save you from your sins, and ask him to forgive you of your sins. He paid the price of our sins, death. Because of our sins we were unable to be with God, but because of his son, who died on the cross and rose three days later, conquering death and breaking the barrier between us and God.

only Allah can give salvation by His Mercy and Forgiveness. But you can reach paradise only if you're a true believer in Islam and Tawheed (oneness of Allah). And a true Muslim that follows the five pillars of Islam, sunnah, hadiths, shariah, and much more like voluntary charity(sadaqa). There must be Taqwa (fearing God) and purity of heart from evil.

"O you who believe! If you are careful of (your duty to) Allah, He will grant you a distinction and do away with your evils and forgive you; and Allah is the Lord of mighty grace," (8:29, online, trans. by M.H. Shakir).

Answer:

Salvation, in Islam, is like salvation in Judaism, but we Muslims follow the last and clearest scripture given to Mankind - through the Final Prophet, Muhammad.

Salvation comes from doing two things:

1) You only worship the One and Only God. There is no god but the One God. He is the One God of Abraham. Whether He is called God, or Elohim or Hashem or Allah, it is the same God. The One God of all the Prophets. The God of Adam and Noah, Abraham and Lot, Isaac and Ishmael, Jacob and Joseph, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad. Peace be upon them all.

2) You do your best to obey God's commandments, knowing that the Day of Judgment is real, that Heaven is real, and that Hell is real.

You will fall short; but God is Forgiving and Merciful. He does not expect us to be perfect; He expects us to be sincere, and to try our best.

If you do the two things above, then God promises to forgive your sins, take away any evil in your soul, and put you into Heaven - which is an amazing place that is so great we cannot imagine it.

Salvation in Islam is only for Allah (God in English); the one and only one God with no partner, no son, no father, no companion, and no associate. Salavation in Islam is achieved by:

  • ritual worships devoted for Allah only,
  • Good deeds for only God sake and not for any other puropse,
  • following the teachings of Quran and prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and
  • adopting good morals and conduct according to Islam teachings.

Salvation in Islam is quite different than its meaning in Christianity. Refer to related question below.

This should be our goal in life, "I want to go to Jannah (Paradise)." The Prophet (saws) has left with us a very small key to Jannah, which we Muslim's today have become oblivious of. Just like you need a key to open your car door, or house door, or office door; similarly you need a key to open Jannah to you. What is this key?

Prophet Muhammad (saws) said," Whoever goes down a path/road searching for Knowledge, Allah will make it easy for him the road to Paradise." [Saheeh Muslim, Vol.3 Hadith No. 99]

Travelling on the path to knowledge refers both to walking or driving along an actual road/pathway, such as going to Conferences, Conventions of ISNA, ICNA etc. going to your local Masajids whenever there is either an international scholar/speaker or a local Scholar/speaker speaking. Searching also entails a metaphysical road, such as studying and memorising Qur'an and Hadeeth. Not merely memorising like a parrot, but understanding it first and then memorising it.

The above Hadeeth of the Prophet (saws) means that Allah makes learning the useful knowledge that is sought after easier for the seeker, clearing the way for him, and smoothing his journey to Paradise.

This is why some of our pious predecessors used to say, "Is there anyone seeking knowledge, so that we can assist him in finding it?"

So brothers and sisters, be LOVERS of Knowledge, be seekers of Knowledge. "Yes, where is my Qur'an, where is my Hadeeth Bukhari."

Getting up every morning with a purpose: to seek Jannah by seeking Knowledge! Knowledge is also the shortest path to Allah. Whoever travels the road of knowledge reaches Allah and Paradise by the shortest route. Knowledge also clears the way out of darkness, ignorance, doubt and skepticism. It is why Allah called His Book, Qur'an, "Light."

Knowledge is the ROAD to Paradise, and Islam is the vehicle that takes you to this destination of Paradise. Just like you get in a car to go from one destination to another, but how? By finding out the directions to get there, either by seeing a map or asking someone. Similarly, our Qur'an and Hadeeth are our maps, and our scholars are the people who give the directions from this map to get to our ultimate destination, Paradise.

Ask yourself, "Is Paradise easy?" Have you ever seen, how easy it is for our Hafizul-Qur'an brothers and sisters, who memorize the whole Qur'an by heart? Have you ever seen how easy it is for some of us to study Qur'an and Hadeeth for hours and hours, whilst others cannot even open the Qur'an or Hadeeth at least once a year or month? Why?

Narrated Ali ibn Taalib (raa), While the Prophet was in a funeral procession he picked up something and started scraping the ground with it, and said," There is none among you but has his place written for him either in Hell-Fire or Paradise." They said, "O Messenger of Allah! Shall we not depend upon what has been written for us and give up deeds?" He said, "Carry on doing (good) deeds, for everybody will find easy to do such deeds as will lead him to his destined place for which he has been created. So he, who is destined to be among the happy (in the Hereafter) will find it easy to do the deeds characteristic of such people, while he who is destined to be among the miserable ones, will find it easy to do the deeds characteristic of such people." Then the Prophet recited the following verses: [Qur'an Al-Layl (92), Verses 5-10]

"As for him who gives and keeps his duty to Allah and fears Him,"

"And believes in Husna (the best)."

"We will make smooth for him the path of Ease (goodness, ie. Paradise)"

"But he who is greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient,"

"And gives the lie to Husna."

"We will make smooth for him the path for Evil (ie. Hell-fire)."

[Saheeh Al-Bukhari, Vol.6, Hadith No.474]

Numerous examples of this above hadeeth and verses of Allah are prevalent in our societies today, yet we don't learn any lessons from them. For example, how easy it is for some to fast the fast of Dawud, meaning fasting every other day, or doing voluntary fasts of Shawwal, Muharram, Rajab, etc. Whereas for some it is even hard to fast in Ramadhan, Why? ever notice how easy it is for some to get up in the middle of the night and talk to their Lord in private in Salat-ul-Tahajjud, while for others it is hard to even make the Obligatory (Fardh) prayers? Why?

How easy it is for some to remain single and yet guard their chastity and protect themselves from fornication, while others are married and yet still indulge in adultery. Why? How easily some memorise ayats (verses) of Qur'an and Hadeeth, while others memorise the latest songs in the market and memorise the latest cuss words used on streets. Why?

You see brothers and sisters, for some of us it is very EASY to practice Islam, as Allah wants to practice, while for others it is very HARD to practice. The answer for this are the verses of Surah Al-Layl, because for those whom it is easy to practice Islam, Allah is making it EASY the road to Paradise, whilst for those whom it is hard to practice, Allah is making it EASY for them the road to Hell-Fire. So why is it easy for some to practice Islam? It is because they are lovers and seekers of Knowledge and not only that, but also act upon that knowledge, and thus Allah is making it easy for them their destination of Paradise. Knowledge is the key and that is why our Prophet used to supplicate in every prayer, "Allahumma Inni Auzubikaa Min Illmin Laa Yanf'aau." O Allah! I seek refuge in you from Knowledge that does not benefit.

It doesn't benefit you brothers and sisters. For hours and hours you are sitting in front of that TV and its not benefiting you as its not leading you to Paradise. For hours and hours you waste time on bed-time novels or on magazines and newspapers in a month and yet it doesn't lead you to Paradise. When all that time you could have been studying Qur'an and Hadeeth or reading Islamic books instead of bed-time story novels and yet making easier for yourself the road to Paradise, and achieving it Insha'Allah. Not only does it not benefit you, but will it harms you. Hours and hours of those TV programs are not teaching you Qur'an and Sunnah, rather teaching you how to date, or how to hook someone from the opposite sex, or teaching you violence or foul language. Thus instilling evil and wicked ideas and things into your mind and heart, just for the pleasure of this temporary world, and making you further away from your destination of Paradise.

In conclusion, I say this brothers and sisters. We need to get our "cars" (Islam) fixed and focused on the right direction to our destination of Paradise. We need to pick up the "maps" (Qur'an & Sunnah) and ask knowledgeable people (scholars/imams) for directions (road/path) to Paradise.

What does Islam think of salvation?

Muslims believe that salvation is achieved through submission (Islam in Arabic) to the one and only one God, the Creator, with no partner, no associate, no son, no companion, and no resemblance. This is the mission of all God prophets since start of mankind, including Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad (peace upon them all). This is achieved through following God Commands and Teachings of God prophets. however, some Christians believe that salvation is achieved through salvation to Jesus the Christ. Muslims believe that salvation is devoted only to God the Creator with no partner or son or associate. This is the only salvation type that is accepted in Islam. Islam is against salvation is the salvation of one to another one. Historically, as the salvation of Africans by some whites who purchased or kidnapped them and forced them to be transported to America and Europe for slave work with no human rights. Historically also is women salvation by the Roman, Greeks, and Arabs, before Islam era, for satisfying their sexual desires or for prostitution. Islam is also against salvation of one to his/her lover to the extreme that he/she loses his/her own will to his/her lover. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) says that any Muslim would not be a true believer unless he/she loves Allah (God in English) and His prophet Muhammad (PBUH) more than anyone or anything else. Islam is also against salvation to your own desires to the extent that you lose your own will just to satisfy these desires, as love of money, love of fame, love of sex, love alcohols, etc.
