Many people have different reasons for giving generously
Some want to feel good about themselves and they want to feel like they help out other people. Their morals and ethics are responsible for their actions

THere is also a strong intensive to give generously and to be nice to people from the psychological point of view. If you give people tend to like you better and to want to give to you as well. (although some psychologist argue that giving in early relationship might make it look like you trying to buy someone and it may ruin a relationship)
There are stories of a king that walked around as a beggar and a man invited him to his house and fed him and clothed him. Later on king gave him half a kingdom and his daughter to marry. Although that story is probably a legend many similar cases can happen in real life.
Many people believe that simply giving is better then making someone work for something
This however might not be true. In communism everybody is suppose to receive according to their needs from the government. And there shouldn't be any private property. Communism however doesnt seem to work.
People work hardest if they work for their own benefit. This might mean that giving generously is overrated. If you employ a lot of people you can give them money in return for work and this way you create products and services and a lot of jobs for people. Noone is used by anyone else.
