Unfortunately within the realm of Christendom, it is somewhat divided.
On the one hand: Some believe that mankind was given an immortal soul by God. This is what their religion has taught them. In essense this means they believe they will be 'transformed' at death, into another 'form' or 'state'; -- and then that they'll be instantly be 'transferred' to live in another realm (in heaven). Interestingly even some of their scholars believe that this is NOT a Bible teaching, but that this idea originates with ancient pre-Bible pagan groups.
On the other hand: you have a few (very few groups) like Jehovah's Witnesses, that believe that at death, all life ceases. They refer to Ezekiel 18:4 and many other verses that clearly state "The soul that is sinning - - it itself will die." Instead they believe in what's called a resurection, which will occur as Jesus said: 'on the last day'. Then they will be raised from the unconscious state of sleep, back to life here on earth.
In the begining God created the heavens and the earth...
When a person without Jesus Christ as their Lord and savior dies, they enter into hell. Hell is a place in the center of the earth origanlly made for the devil (Lucifer) and fallen angels (Demons). Hell wasnt made for humans in the beginingg of Creation. After Lucifer who was an angel tried to over throw God with a third of God's Angels he failed and was cast out of heaven, he became the first sinner and was punished and cast out of heaven. Satan then tempted and lead the first man and women (Adam and Eve) into sin and rebellion as well. Man then became spiritually dead to God because of sin.
Over time man would build an altar and offer up sacrafices of spotless lambs for remession of sin by slaying the lamb. Soon God sent his only son Jesus who wasn't born of sin like Adam and lived inside of him in Spirit thus making him the son of God and the son of man. Jesus lived a Holy life and died on the cross and bore the sins of ALL mankind. He having an eternal spirit rose from the dead. If anyone belives that he is the son of God and repents of their sins in the name of Jesus they will die and go to heaven. It is Jesus blood that makes us new, Just like that lamb he was Holy and acceptible to God his death represented every sin that every man would ever do he took are place. The Bible says in John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son that whososever belives in him shall not perish but have everlasting life. The bible says 1 Corinthians 15:22 "For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive." If someone dies without excepting Christ and repenting (Turning from their sins) they will perish in hell.
Hell which is just a holding place until the white throne judgment (The final judgment of sinful man before God) after this the whole hell itself will be cast into the lake of fire. This is why the devils seeks to lead astray as many men as he can.
Gods will isn't that any should perish but that all should come into repentance.
None, practice, beliefs and final destinations are all different.
