AnswerThe original breakup of India into two separate nations, India and Pakistan did result from religious differences, although some sought to resist that movement. Kashmir was disputed, because the will of the ordinary people was felt not to have been reflected in the decision of the state's ruler.

The people of East Pakistan were ethnically quite different from those of West Pakistan, sharing little in common, other than religion. They felt that the government in West Pakistan ignored their needs and treated them as inferior. The Pakistani Civil War, or Bagladesh Liberation War, resulted in the secession of East Pakistan in December 1971, forming the new state of Bangladesh. The Indo-Pakistani war began when India sought to protect the minority Hindu population in East Pakistan. To this extent, the war was about religion.
