Most will assert that because he was born in Judea to Jewish parents, spoke Judeo-Aramaic, and claimed to be a Rabbi that he was a Jew. Some will make the argument that even though he was born to Jews, his spirit was not that of Jew, but perhaps of a Christian or simply Divine. However, they all agree that Jesus was not Muslim because Islam came around roughly 600 years after Jesus died.

Only Muslims assert that Jesus was a muslim. The key to understanding this is that Islam has two meanings that many Muslims and Non-Muslims confuse. There is today's Islam, which refers to the religion codified by Muhammad as a way of properly submitting to the Will of God. There is also "islam" (with a lower-case "i") which is the act of submitting to God without necessarily following the codes and edicts established in Islam. Jesus is considered to be muslim in the act-of-submission sense as opposed to being a Muslim in the Muhammad-sense because he did not follow ideas that came after his death, but the Islamic tradition holds that his prophecy is from those who correctly submitted to the divine will before the edicts came to pass.
