Many persons were crucified during Jesus' time, so death by crucifixion was not unusual.

But the death of Jesus Christ was unusual in several aspects. First and foremost Jesus came to this earth to die the death of Crucifixion so that He could atone for mankind's sin. That is He died in our place taking our sin upon the cross with Him. He was sinless but became sin for us so that we might be set free. Second Jesus gave up His life as no one could take it from Him. He allowed the Romans to crucify Him. Not only was Jesus' death unusual, but on the third day after death He was resurrected from the dead. Jesus was the first person to do this and as yet no one else has been resurrected. A few have been brought back to life only to died again at their appointed time, but no one but Jesus has been resurrected.

Now since Jesus died for our sin this does not mean we will all go to heaven. In order to have eternal life in heaven we must accept Jesus Christ as our personal Savior, love Him and follow Him.

In Roman times, it was not unusual for those convicted of serious crimes to be crucified.

It was unusual for Jesus to die so quickly. Crucifixion was meant to be cruel and usually involved two or three days of agony before finally dying, so it is first of all surprising that the Romans allowed the crucifixion to take place on a Friday, meaning that the three convicted persons would only suffer for a few hours before it was necessary to end their misery before the Sabbath began at 6 pm. In the synoptic gospels, he was crucified at the third hour (9 am) and died at 3 o'clock in the afternoon; in John's Gospel, he was crucified at the sixth hour (noon) and died at 3' o'clock in the afternoon, after barely three hours. It is a historical fact that the Romans broke the legs of crucified men in order to hasten death before the Sabbath, just as described in John's Gospel, but there is no other known instance of a Roman soldier spearing a crucified man as the coup de grace, so the case of Jesus seems to have been unique.
