Some are: Freedom to practice the religion of their choice in the manner they chose; some were sent to the colonies as indentured servants; others were sent to a penal colony in Georgia for assorted crimes they were convicted of. Still others came to join families, to pursue a better future in the new land.

Most came to the Americas so that they could practice their religion freely without fear of persecution from the strict Catholic church. They were breakaway groups from the dominant church.

Others came because of the availability of land and the opportunity to start a new life, away from the grime and poverty of some European cities.

England was still the governing authority in the early Americas which brought about the War of Independence, which the colonist won and America became an independent nation.
