Your soul or mental life according to a psychological definition could be your psyche.
From a religious perspective, many believe that:
God has given us free will, so that is sort of ours, but also God has made us, even our personalities...i mean, look at the animals on the planet & how God even cares about their well-fare, and has given them their personalities & instructions on how to survive, basic instincts, etc., i believe we posses our souls (well, God does actually) inside, & mind , & spirit. I think you should ask Jesus the question & I'm sure you will find the answer. But we all belong to God.
Others might come up with a scientific explanation:
I found an excellent reference for what the soul actually is. Different than what most people will try to tell you, is a physical relationship found in physics that explains our spiritual world. How it is physically possible, and possibly verifiable, that our soul is a consequence of all peoples everywhere.

Others take a more philosophical tone:
Religion and science have made foul attempts to define a soul by a "one size fits all" mentality. the beauty of existence is that the only definition that stands for true representation is in it of itself. Only one's imagination can spill on the canvas of your reality to illuminate that which is you. This is to say that the answer to your question is the question itself.

Most religions believe in suffering as test in ones faith in God.However distinction is made in physical, mental and spiritual suffering to cleanse ones body and soul.
Atman
Both have no significance for the spiritually evolved. Spiritually evolved means self-realized persons. Heaven is the highest state of ones consciousness, leaving behind ego, desires and attachments. It is a myth to say that a soul reaches heaven after death. In fact ones very thought and actions during this life itself will take one to heaven, the stage of bliss. This situation largely depends upon ones mental abilities.
Heaven is actually plural in that there are many heavens in the Astral regions of Creation, where both heavens and hells exist. When one dies, ones brain and personality for that life also expire. What carries on is ones Soul with its MIND attached. One's Soul goes before a judge and together the Soul and the judge go over how well one did working on the Fate Karma one designed for ones last life. This is completely objective because there is no "pride" as we know it on the physical plane in heaven. So "pride" did not originate in heaven is the answer to your question. Pride is an aspect of ones ego, which is who and what ones MIND believes one to be based on what it obtains "psychologically" at the time of ones birth, in each life one experiences. So pride originates on the physical plane and is largely due to misperceptions held within ones MIND realm. Ones beliefs are therefore somewhat "delusional" in that they are "relative" to ones "Spiritual Evolution".... or the result of completing Karma over many, many lifetimes. The best source for this is "The Path of the Masters", by Julian P. Johnson, M.D.
The Bible say's that each person that dies, their soul is asleep (their souls are like waiting in a waiting room) I'm just telling what I think the Bible says. No. the departed soul does not see their love ones.
The answer is yes. That is, there are houses within which individuals who have died continue to inhabit those houses. Three things have to exist for this to be noticed. One is the person who dies must have a strong attachment to the place where he or she died. Secondly, the person has a strong "unfinished" business with the place. Thirdly, the departed Soul must have a very strong MIND and a desire to manifest itself into the physical realm, and it is use of MIND level energy being applied to physical phenomena that ones physical eyes can "see" or measure with certain instrumentation. The normal and natural sequence of events at ones time of death is that angels accompany ones Soul to the Astral region where one goes before a "judge" where this judge and ones Soul evaluate ones just ended life relative to how well one did working on ones Fate Karma for that life. Then one designs a new Fate Karma for ones next life. Then one goes to either some heaven or some hell, depending upon whether or not one life was mostly good, or bad?
by knowing GOD's law and living it to the best of ones ability, loving GOD with ones whole heart, mind, body, soul, and strength.

Ok lets see if ones bran is the intalect to ones flesh body then ones spirit is the intalect to ones soul so your soul is your spiritchole body and your spirit is your spiritchole brain so the Holy Spirit bears witnes with your spirit threfore the Holy Spirit is in ones head (brain). P.S The Holy Spirit is also referd to by some people as ther conchins witch is also located in your thought proses in return is in ones brain (head).
Purification of the soul is only achievable through ones own good deeds. Meditation is just a figurative "lens" with which to focus ones thought`s....good OR bad. Selfishness for its own sake is the polluter of the soul and empathy being the best place to start as the world seems to have an increasing lack of it.
