Good idea.

Answer:

There are many advantages to marrying an atheist:

  • funeral expenses are considerably cheaper
  • they can turn away door-to-door evangelists without a thought
  • They usually are up for a lively debate
  • they can see the humor in many newspaper "ain't that a miracle" stories
  • your mom and Aunt Tilly won't have to work for something to complain about
  • at church they'll tend the kids 'cause they don't care about the sermon
  • they present a whole new world view
  • the cost of prayer cards, votive candles and supporting missionaries falls right off
Answer:

Haha. The previous post thinks the atheist will go to church. :-P

Actually, I'm an atheist and I'm marrying a catholic woman next year. There's nothing wrong with "mixed" marriages. You just need to be sure to communicate and get all of your beliefs our there and be willing to talk about them... at any time and don't make it a subject you "just don't talk about." That will just cause problems later. And, be willing to compromise.

And, don't keep Atheism as a secret from either family. The sooner everyone gets used to the idea one of the people is an atheist, the better.

For example, she doesn't tell me that I should go to church, and I don't tell her she shouldn't waste her time with it. I said I wouldn't allow money to be donated through a church (because they take up to 60% of it to pay for their own things), and she said that's fine and we can donate to charities directly, and that's fine with me. We're also quite relaxed and even joke about it... I say I'll love her forever, or at least until I die and she says she'll love me forever and miss me when she's in heaven and I don't exist anymore.

The biggest issues for me and my fiance was about kids and how they would be raised. Will they be baptized? Will they be circumcised? Would private school be an option if we moved to an area where the public schools were bad?

My fiance and I had ironed all of that out within the first two months of our relationship because we decided that we should discuss it and see if we should even both continuing to date if our beliefs conflicted to much.

Are Catholics obligated to have children if possible if they get married and what if they're marrying an Atheist who doesn't want to have kids?

No, Catholics are not obligated to have children. They feel if it is God's will, then it will happen. Marrying an Atheist won't make any difference because they will still have their own beliefs.
