In Islam, neither can a husband beat his wife nor can a wife beat her husband. It is mentioned in Quran that a husband may lightly tap his wife in case of conflict as a visual motion of disagreement; one where he cannot extend his hand back using his elbow. (Must use his wrist to tap). It is well documented that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH); the human model for all Muslims; never tried to beat any of his wives even talked to them harshly.

Thus the husband is commanded in Quran to treat her kindly and with forgiveness and honor even if he may hate her.

It is not altogether Haram in Islam. In dire necessity, a husband may slap his wife (not on the face) if she commits some shameful act. However, it is extremely disliked by the holy Prophet (SAW) who wants that men should be kind and loving to their wives. The peace and satisfaction of home depend on the mutual respect and love the husband and wife show to each other. Bickering between husband and wife not only destroys the peace of a house, it had a very harmful effect on the children. Love is the binding force among the members of a family.
