The two earliest sources for the Book of Genesis were anonymous authors now known as the Yahwist and the Elohist. This is because the Yahwist called his God by the name Yahweh. while the Elohist used the name Elohim.
'Elohim' is the plural of 'El' (a god) and is used in Genesis for more than one god. When used in a singular context, or with a singular verb, 'Elohim' was used by the Elohist to refer to his God. Leonard Kass points out that in the story of Jacob, it is often hard fo modern scholars to discern whether Jacob is talking of the Egyptian gods, in the plural, or of his one God.
