Certainly, in 2 Maccabees 12:38-46, they offered sacrifices for the dead that they may be loosed from their sins. This concept is based on the Christian belief in purgatory, and All Soul's Day is the day that we remember all those who have gone before us. This has several references in the New Testament (to the purifying after death), including 1 Corinthians 3:15 and 1 Peter 1:7. Or as St. John Crysostom say in a homily:Let us help and commemorate them. If Job's sons were purified by their father's sacrifice, why would we doubt that our offerings for the dead bring them some consolation? Let us not hesitate to help those who have died and to offer our prayers for them.
The christian equivalent of the Day of the Dead is All Souls Day. (NOT BIBLICAL)
