Prophet Mohammed had 12 wives. Out of which he lived only 9 years with his 11 wives. At the age of 25,he married his first wife Khadija. They lived together until he attained the age of 53. After battles conducted by Muslims for self defence many women bereaved. So he has to protect them,so he married them there was no other options for protecting them.
At age of 25 Prophet Mohammed married a 40 years old widow Khadeejah. They lived together for 28 years. After the death of Khadijah, when he conducted the battles for self defence, many of the women lost their husbands. So He and his companions have to protect them. So they married them. Prophet Mohammed married 12 wives in his life. Out of which 11 were lived with prophet for 9 years after the Prophet aged 53.From the age of 25 to 53 Prophet lived with one wife. In Holy Quran 4:3 4:3. If ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly with the orphans, Marry women of your choice, Two or three or four; but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one, or (a captive) that your right hands possess, that will be more suitable, to prevent you from doing injustice says that one can marry more than one woman iff they can give justice between them.
He had eleven official wives (Khadija, Sawda, Ayesha, Hafsa, Zeynab, Hind, Zeynab, Juwairiya, Ramla, Safiya and Maymuna). He also had two official concubines (Rayhana and Mariya), whom some people count among the wives, bringing the total to thirteen.
He is said to have married at least nine other women, but they are not counted as "Mothers of the Faithful", so perhaps they were only concubines. One of them, Fatima al-Aliya, came to live in his household, but he divorced her after a very short time. Some say it was because she was too fond of looking at men in the mosque. The other eight all died or were divorced before the consummation, sometimes before Mohammed even met them, so it not surprising that they are not usually counted on the final list.
As in all other religions, no limits on how many times one can marry. The limits are on how many wives one can have. In Islam. It is limited to having 4 wives at one time on condition to deal with them equally and fairly. Because of the difficulty for one to fulfill this condition, he is encouraged not to marry more than one. Other religions, they don't have limits on the number of wives one can marry per religion holy books although limited to one by church and other religious leaders.
