No spies were sent into Egypt, but you are probably referring to the sending of the spies into Canaan, which was the Promised Land. There were indeed twelve.

A:The 'Spies' story is confusing to some. Approaching their destination after more than a year of wandering, Moses was commanded to send men to search out the land of the Canaanites.
