Jesus gave his life as a sacrifice to pay for the sins of mankind. God accepted His death as payment for the penalty of sin that had fallen on all men. This being made possible by the fact that Jesus, being the Son of God Himself, was able to live a sinless life, otherwise He would have died for His own sin and could not have substituted his death for ours. The Gospel of John says: "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life".
His resurrection is proof that His sacrifice was acceptable to God as payment for the sins of mankind. He made it clear, however, that the only way for a man to be forgiven of his sins & thus inherit eternal life in heaven, is to believe and trust in Jesus' death and resurrection as payment for his personal sin, acknowledging that there is no other way for him to go to heaven. Jesus said "I am the way, the truth and the life; no man can come to the Father but through Me"
