Advent means literal "the comming to." Believers that celebrate advent are looking forward to Easter, the coming of the Lord. Some celebrate it for 40 days not counting Sundays and some only do a 7 day advent. The 40 comes from a time of testing. Forty days in the wilderness for Jesus, 40 years in the wilderness for the people of Israe, etc.
If you follow a strict liturgical year on Ash Wednesday you set aside a negative behavior that helps you to prepare yourself for the Easter Time. I know of some people that don't eat red meat during this time, some young people that don't play Video Games, some stop alcohol, etc.
Whatever you do during this time it is just a time of remembering.
You don't really prepare for Advent, Advent, itself is a preparation for Christmas. So all of Advent is preparation for something else.
