Buddhism IS the middle path. When it was started, Siddhartha only saw extremes around him - extreme indulgence or extreme restraint. He didn't think extreme indulgence was the way to end suffering, and when he tried extreme restraint he became so thin from not eating that his mind couldn't function properly. So he started a new way of moderation, and became The Buddha.
Middle Way is the hallmark of Buddhism. After given up the life as a Prince, He seeked to find the purpose of living being. He tortured Himself for many years until He nearly die of starvation. He then realise that enjoying life to the fullest as a Prince is not the way; torturing Himself is the the way. The correct way is the Middle Way. After His enlightenment He preached the Middle Way - neither attachment to the near and dear or aversion to the far. The Middle Way leads us to His Teaching of Impermanance, Non Self and the Law of Nature; the way to return to the source, the True Mind, Buddha nature, emptiness - the final destination as a Buddhist.
"If you you want to keep a bird in your hands, be careful. If you grab it too lightly, it will fly away; if you grab it too strongly, it will die."
The Middle Way (Madhyamika in Sanskrit; Uma in Tibetan) is the name of the highest of the four schools of Buddhist philosophy. It is called Middle Way because it doesn't go into the extremes of nihilism and eternalism. The followers of the Middle way therefore say that phenomena are neither truly existent nor non-existent.
