The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" Church) teaches that women are equal to men, although given different roles. Men are consistantly reminded that women are to be treated with respect - any form of abuse is absolutely not tolerated and is grounds for excommunication. Objectification of women (through pornography and other means) is also grounds for excommunication. Women and men are instructed to work together "equally yoked" to serve their families and the Church. While men oversee the Church generally, women are essentially responsible for making it happen - they organize congregation and community activities, service and humanitarian projects, provide Sunday School lessons, youth groups, and other worship meetings. Women provide sermons and prayers in Sunday Services regularly. In fact, the Church's women's organization, the Relief Society, is one of the largest women's groups in the world.

There are approximately 5 million woman members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) scattered around the globe. They come from almost every nation and culture. They are rich and poor, single and married, old and young. Every Mormon woman is different, but most share some similarities.

For example, Mormon women tend to be quite religious. They tend to be quite conservative in their dress and actions. They tend to support traditional family roles and have a strong desire to be wives and mothers. They tend to be highly educated. They also tend to enjoy homemaking activities such as crafting, decorating, and baking. They often use their spare time to serve the community. Of course not all fit the norm; some are never married, some are single mothers, and some are very involved in their careers.

Mormon women also tend to be very involved in the church. They work side by side with men in leadership positions and are almost solely responsible for the children's and youth organizations, women's groups (the Relief Society is the official international Mormon woman's group), and organizing and carrying out service within the congregation. They are expected to give sermons, lead the congregation in prayer, and teach children, teens, and adults in Sunday School.

Yes. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) believes that women are of equal importance and value as men and therefore should be treated with equal love and respect. Mormons believe that while men and women are equal in importance, they are not the same. Men and women each have distinct roles and responsibilities, and each of these roles and responsibilities is equally important. Women's responsibilities within Church are focused more on service, while men's responsibilities are focused more on administration, but all share equally in preaching sermons, teaching classes, providing music, etc. Only men are ordained to the priesthood, but women preach, teach, and lead congregational prayers every Sunday without ordination.

Historically, Mormon women have been ahead of the curve when it comes to equality. Mormon women in Utah had the right to vote half a century before other American women. They were encouraged to get a college education and to have jobs. They were able to initiate divorces and often did so. Mormon women started their own hospital, which had all female doctors and nurses.

You are welcome to visit a Mormon congregation and spend time with the women there. They would be happy to discuss their feelings and answer if they feel they are equal with the men. Also, you can check out the "Related Links" below to see how other Mormons answered a similar question.

Mormon women are treated with equal respect and dignity as men. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) believe that all people, regardless of race or gender, are equal in importance. Only men are ordained, but Mormon women preach, teach classes, lead congregational prayers and hymns, and serve in leadership positions without ordination.

Mormon men are regularly reminded that they should honor women, and many sermons are given by church leaders each year discussing the importance of women. Check out the "Related Links" below if you'd like to see how other Mormons answered a similar question.
