The Spanish Crown, in its Royal Orders for New Discoveries of 1573, decreed that Indians should be taught "to live in a civilized manner, clothed and wearing shoes...given the use of bread and wine and oil and many other essentials of life--bread, silk, linen, horses, cattle, tools, and weapons, and all the rest that Spain has had.
