There is too much variety to Christianity in the United States to answer such a question. There are forms of popular Christianity going on in 21st century America that either did exist in 19th century America or were not popular enough to bring those varieties to mind when the word Christianity was mentioned. What usually comes to mind to an American today when Christianity is mentioned is very likely not what came to mind to an American in 1960.
In America today the word Christianity usually brings to mind the late night TV "ministeries" hustling donations and the celebrity pastors of megachurches that have over 10,000 congregants. And since the mid to late 1990s the word christian is likely to bring to mind apocalyptic preachers selling books and DVDs about the current state of Israel.
During the American national and state election cycles three main themes seem to repeat themselves. They are: a) gay marriage and gay minority status rights b) The practice of abortion, laws about this as it relates to parents and their children, and taxpayer funding for abortions c) Creationism (not exclusively christian) vs. Evolution and different types or degrees of Darwinists as this relates to public school curriculum.
As I have lived through many governments both in England and Australia, I have come to the conclusion that religion plays only very little where government is concerned. Government is run on political rules and not God's rules. However it knows when the people have had enough and so will apply Christian ethics to appease the people.
The American Constitution was built on Christian ethics, but there is a strong move to have the Constitution changed or done away with altogether. So much for Christian values.
