However the purpose of the genealogy of Matthew is to trace the lineage of Jesus, Mt:1:1 "Son of David"... The genealogy is broken up to three groups of 14 generations each... to emphasize that Jesus is the "Divine" [3 - being the 'sacred' number] Son of David [14].
