Also, a side note, The Bible does not say that Adam and Eve ate an 'apple'. It says they ate a 'fruit'.(Genesis 3:6)
Adam, in search of something to wear over his groin, discovered the fig leaf.
They wore fig leaf underwear to cover themselves because they were ashamed when they found out they were naked after disobeying God and eating the forbidden fruit.
In most interpretations of Adam it would be inappropriate to show him naked, as he would have been, so a fig leaf is used to protect his modesty. It is not known whether the fig leaf would have been available for him to use at the time but artistic impression has now been applied.
