One view holds that you are married whenever you have a relationship with a partner. That is also to say that a separation of any relationship is equal to divorce. And if one applies common sense, God sees everything and the fact that we have hidden our relationship from the state, the Church or even the society, does not hide it from God. Of course, things like one-night-stands, polygamy, etc. are also accounted for and this is probably the reason that God has advised us not to do them (in form of laws in the Old Testament) - they insult not only the ideal which God have created us to pursue, but also everyone involved, including the self (i.e. the person that sees him/herself participating in such acts). On the other hand, the Church blessings are only this - blessings. And if you truly believe that the Church is a community in which you participate, then it will be most natural for you to be willing to have such blessing.
