John the Baptist was the forerunner of the Messiah, the one who was to prepare the way before the Messiah started His ministry.
The other "john" was the disciple/apostles of Christ. He was chosen by Christ to follow Him and learn, and believe in Jesus and then to go out and preach the Gospel/Good news that God had sent the Messiah/ Jesus into the world to save sinners.
This Gospel is still in the world today and it is man's duty to come to God through Jesus Christ His Son. John 14:6 tells us, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except by me."
