The current word "book" is a derivative of the Old English word "boc" which was a derivative of the Proto-Germanic word *bokiz meaning "beech" as in the "beech tree". There used to be old beechwood tablets on which runes were inscribed. The similarity between that and the wood-derived paper that was bound together lead to this word being adopted for the current use of "book".
