Hepatocentesis : Now replace Thora (from thoracentesis) with Hepato, and you've got hepatocentesis. Thora is from Thoracic - or the rib cage, where a thoracentesis is performed. centesis - (surgery) the act of puncturing a body cavity or organ with a hollow needle in order to draw out fluid. Hepato means the liver. So it's an invasive procedure/the act of puncturing the body cavity or organ to remove fluid or air from the space around the liver for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. A cannula is carefully introduced into the abdominal cavity around the liver, generally after administration of local anesthesia.
Hepatocentesis refers to the placement of a needle into the liver to obtain a sample of liver tissue for evaluation. This procedure is used to diagnose liver conditions such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, or liver cancer. It is also known as liver biopsy.
