I guess you mean the new subway line (Linea 12), as the subway or metro has already been running since 1969. It will connect the metro grid to the southeastern communities of greater Mexico City, including Culhuacan, Tlaltenco and Tlahuac and relieving the Mexico City road system of some 450,000 travelers each day.
Mexico City began the 20th century with a population of approximately 540,000 people and 800 vehicles to meet the demand of public transportation. By 1953 the population had increased to 3.5 million and in 1960 there were over 4.5 million. By 1964 there was a strong trend of congested roads by the 5 million people who made use of 7,200 public transport units circulating the capital; almost 40% of all trips were made in the city downtown.
The principal promoter of the construction of Mexico City Metro was engineer Bernardo Quintana (1919-1984), who carried out a series of studies that resulted in a draft plan and ultimately led to the construction of the Mexico City Metro.
