  • Emotional abuse can often times be worse for the victim because it shows no physical scars, but certainly mental scars. If a victim is constantly verbally abused it comes under the heading of 'emotion abuse.' The abuser picks away at their victim to control them by saying things such as 'no one would want you'; 'you're useless, can't do anything right and won't amount to anything.' This takes the self confidence away from the victim and they cannot function properly through life. Generally these victims of emotional abuse are extremely quiet or 'wall flowers' and do not interact on a more healthy basis with society. Their schoolwork, job may be affected by it as well and difficulty making friends or keeping friends.

Emotional Abuse is Real Abuse?

Emotional abuse has been called invisible abuse because there is no physical evidence of it. However, if someone is calling you names, trying to control your finances and your time, twisting the words you say, treating you with no respect and other tactics common to emotional abusers, it is just as hurtful and wrong as if that person were harming you physically. If their actions repeatedly make you feel bad, it's time to stand up for yourself.

Yes. Most physical abusers are first emotionally abusive. Some never physically abuse, but remain emotionally abusive, or recognize the problem and get help.
