It is just slang----a kid is a baby goat, and it's just an affectionate nickname we use for our children. Probably, it has its basis in how children can be as troublesome as baby goats. They have kind of a reputation, you know? Although, the name "kids" has become so natural to a parent that many probably don't even know what kids really means or realize where it comes from.

The term "kids" to refer to children likely originated from Old Norse or Germanic language roots, where "kid" originally meant a young goat. Over time, the term expanded to refer to young children as a casual and affectionate way of addressing them.
