Morris Mitchtom was inspired by the little bear in Clifford Berryman's cartoon bear in editorial cartoons about Theodore Roosevelt, who was known by the public as "Teddy." Mitchtom made homemade toy bears and called them "Teddy's bears," and the name stuck.
