In most cases, that does seem to be the way it goes. That old saying that "Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it" stands true. Right now, the United States is nicely cruising down that path of repeating past mistakes.
Maybe if we can get a few (million) people in this country who remember their history without the revisionist garbage that passes for history these days...
