Nursultan Nazarbayev is the first and only president of Kazakhstan.
He first took power of the region as Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Kazhak Socialist Soviet Republic in 1984 March 22. He was elected president of Kazhakstan by the Supreme Soviet, taking the position in 1990 April 22, and remained president when Kazakhstan declared independence on 1991 December 14 after he won a single candidate election. Nazarbayev was re-elected in 2005 December for another 7-year term.
