Mohamed Hussein Tantawi was the Acting President of Egypt at the start of 2012. He was replaced by Mohamed Morsi on June 30 of that year.

Tantawi became the Acting President of Egypt on 2011 February 12, after long time President Hosni Mubarak stepped down after the protests at the beginning of 2011. Tantawi's official title was the Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces.

2012 May-June Presidential Elections:

Morsi ran for President while leading the Freedom and Justice Party, an Islamic party with strong ties to the Muslim Brotherhood of Egypt. Ahmed Shafik and Morsi were the top placers in the first election, placing the two in a presidential run off election. As Shafik was previously Mubarak's Prime Minister, the run-off election was cast as a battle between the old politicians and Muslims. Following Morsi's election, Morsi resigned as head of the FJP.

Morsi is Egypt's fifth president and first democratically elected President. His term will expire on 2016 June 30.
