Henry I of England's first wife was Edith, daughter of the Scottish King Malcolm III.
Edith's name was changed to Matilda for political reasons following her marriage to Henry. Matilda died on May 1, 1118. Henry and Matilda had four children, two of whom - a son and a daughter - survived to adulthood, though the son died young.
His second wife was Adeliza, daughter of Godfrey I of Leuven, possessed of several titles and also known as Godfrey the Great, Godfrey the Courageous, and Godfrey the Bearded.
Adeliza was known in England as Adeliza of Louvain, or Adelicia, Adela or Aleidis, of Louvain. She and Henry had no children; after Henry's death in 1135 she remarried, in 1138, William d'Aubigny, 1st Earl of Arundel, with whom she had a son, William, 2nd Earl of Aubigny. Adeliza died in 1151; William in 1176.
Henry I is recorded as having the highest number of illegitimate children - at least 25 - of any English king.
He died on December 1, 1135, of food poisoning, described as caused by eating too many lampreys, his favourite food, his cause of death famously referred to as being from 'a surfeit of lampreys'.
