She is the world's first openly gay head of government, and was also listed by Forbes as one of the 100 most powerful women in the world. Her government has banned both prostitution and strip clubs in Iceland, moving towards treating women as humans as opposed to commodities.

Grímsson was the first Icelander to obtain a PhD in political science in 1970, and later became the first Political Science professor at the University of Iceland. He was the first president to veto a law from the assembly in 2004, provoking various debates on whether this power should be revoked or checked in some way. He is currently serving his 5th - 4 year term. 2 of the previous presidential elections (2000 and 2008) elections were uncontested.
