Born 1939 July 15, Silva served 2-years of compulsory military time in 1964 and became a teacher in 1966. He entered politics after the Carnation Revolution, joining the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and later became its leader in 1985. He became the prime minister on 1985 November 6 and served until 1995 October 28. Cavaco Silva ran for president in 1996, but was defeated. He ran again, and was elected on 2006 January 22.
