Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is the Prime Minister of Turkey.
Erdoğan became the Prime Minister of Turkey on 2003 March 14. He was the Mayor of Instanbul from 1994 March 27 to 1998 November 6. He was removed from office and arrested for "incitement to commit an offense and incitement to commit religious hatred" after reading lines of a poem with religious warfare undertones, and was sentenced to 10 years in prison and a life-time ban on public office.
Erdoğan would serve 4 months in prison before being released. On 2001 August 14, he formed the Justice and Development party, which won the 2002 election. However, due to his public office ban, he could not take office. A number of amendments were introduced to the laws of Turkey in 2003, and Erdoğan was then able to become prime minister. The party would win re-election in 2007 and 2011.
